Alumni Link Talks - Nutrition Series video

The Alumni Affairs Office of the Public Affairs Unit organized three Alumni Link talks, at which volunteer speakers elaborated on the principles of keeping a balanced diet and shared tips on maintaining good health. Each talk attracted an audience of more than 120 people.

photo The talk on 'Health Preservation via Chinese Dietary Therapy' was conducted by Ms Li Mei-kuen, Assistant Professor of the School of Science and Technology and registered Chinese medicine practitioner, on 19 October. Ms Li introduced the 'Five-colour Diet' and emphasized the need to take food of each of the five different colours (red, yellow, white, black and green) in suitable amounts. Participants had a chance to conduct a simple test to assess their health status and learned more about choosing an appropriate diet.

Ms Jessa Chow, an Accredited Practising Dietitian of the Dietitians Association of Australia and a dietitian of NutraCare Consultancy Limited, made a presentation on 'Eat “Fit”!' on 26 October. She started off by showing a list of food items with high calories. She then illustrated how to read nutrition labels and explained the harm of trans fat. The audience was given tips on how to choose low-fat food items and healthy snacks.

The last talk entitled 'Get Rid of Urban Diseases', held on 9 November, was hosted by Ms Flavia U, Senior Dietitian of the Hong Kong Sanatorium and Hospital and former Chairperson of the Hong Kong Dietitians Association. Explaining how high blood pressure and high levels of blood glucose, cholesterol and triglycerides are linked to common urban diseases, she suggested eating more vegetables at lunch. She also said that eating food items rich in omega-3 fatty acid, such as deep sea fish and flax seeds, can help lower triglyceride levels.

The shop owner, Mr Massimo Sfriso, introduced the history of Italian cheese by sharing three Italian proverbs about cheese. Six tasty cheese dishes, accompanied by three boutique wines, were served, and their attributes and characteristics elucidated on by the shop's Marketing Officer, Ms Shemila Cheng.

Fund-raising appeal for the Alumni Scholarship and Bursary Fund

The Alumni Affairs Office has recently helped raise funds for the Alumni Scholarship and Bursary Fund. More than $110,000 was received from 66 supportive alumni and students, while $80,000 was solicited from another 14 alumni who pledged to make annual donations for three consecutive years. The amount will be matched 100% by the Mr Vincent Woo Matching Donation Fund.
