OUHK presents over $5.5 million in financial awards

The OUHK presented about 300 scholarships and subject prizes, and some 380 bursaries with a total value of more than $5.5 million for the 2010-2011 academic year at the award presentation ceremony on 18 October.

photo Officiating at the ceremony was Director of The Yuen Yuen Institute Mr Henry Tong Sau-chai, who presented the awards together with the OUHK Council Chairman Dr Eddy C Fong, Deputy Council Chairman Mr Edward Cheung, Treasurer Mr Michael Wong, President Prof. John C Y Leong, and a number of patrons and representatives from different organizations.

At the ceremony, Mr Tong, on behalf of The Yuen Yuen Institute, donated $3 million to the OUHK in support of the University's development, including the expansion of campus facilities, enhancement of learning support, and the establishment of scholarships and bursaries for students.

photo Mr Tong said that the OUHK is different from other local institutions in that it provides a platform for Hong Kong people, especially busy working adults, to acquire knowledge and to enjoy learning. Learners are given opportunities to fulfil their aspirations for learning according to their own professional needs, schedules and level of personal interest, through the various study modes offered by the University.

The OUHK established the Student Assistance Fund to provide scholarships and bursaries to students who excel in their studies or have to shoulder heavy financial burdens. Dedicated bursaries have also been set up for students with disabilities, new arrivals and prison inmates.

photo Addressing the ceremony, Prof. Leong thanked donors for their ardent support of the Student Assistance Fund. He said that their generosity is a recognition of students' efforts.

Davy Lee Kwok-fai, a Chinese humanities studies student studying via distance learning, delivered a vote of thanks on behalf of the scholarship winners. Davy is now the group corporate secretary of a listed company. Apart from studying the Bachelor of Arts in Chinese Humanities programme at the OUHK, he has also obtained a Master's Degree in financial investment and a Doctoral Degree in business administration from other local institutions between 2005 and the present. Davy thanked the teachers at the OUHK and said that they have inspired him to explore contemporary Chinese history and philosophy. Davy said he would donate the total sum of the scholarship towards the University's development.
