    Four distinguished individuals awarded honorary doctoral degrees video

    Dr Simon Kwok Siu-ming, BBS, JP
    (Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa)

    Dr Simon Kwok Siu-ming is Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Sa Sa International Holdings Limited, a listed global cosmetics retailing empire he has built over the past three decades. It is now Asia’s leading cosmetics retailer and a renowned consumer brand, standing as a testament to Dr Kwok’s enterprising spirit and commitment to innovation and excellence. Dr Kwok has made enormous contributions to the industry. He is the key figure in various trade associations including the Cosmetic & Perfumery Association of Hong Kong, the Federation of Beauty Industry (HK), the Quality Tourism Services Association, the Professional Validation Centre of Hong Kong Business Sector and the Hong Kong Brands Protection Alliance. He is also a member of the Hubei Provincial Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference. He received an honorary doctorate in business administration from Lingnan University in 2008. A former member of the University Court of the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST), Dr Kwok is currently an elected member of the Board of Trustees of New Asia College of the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK), a voting member of the University of Hong Kong Foundation and a board member of the Hong Kong Polytechnic University Development Foundation. He has been appointed a Justice of the Peace and awarded a Bronze Bauhinia Star by the HKSAR Government.

    Mr Li Rongrong
    (Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa)

    Mr Li Rongrong, the first Chairman of the State-owned Assets Supervision and Administration Commission (SASAC) of the State Council, was influential in the reform and restructuring of state-owned enterprises (SOEs) and strategic adjustment of the structure of the state economy. Under his leadership between 2003 and 2010, SASAC achieved remarkable progress in furthering the listings, mergers and acquisitions of central SOEs, boosting the total value of such assets by 2.4 times. Mr Li graduated from the Chemical Engineering Department of Tianjin University. He then held various senior positions including Vice Chairman of the Wuxi Municipal Economic Commission, Chairman of the Wuxi Municipal Planning Commission and Vice Chairman of the Jiangsu Provincial Planning and Economic Commission. In 1992, he was transferred to the Central Government, working first in the Manufacture Office and the Economic and Trade Office under the State Council. He was then appointed Secretary-General and Vice Chairman of the State Economic and Trade Commission (SETC). In subsequent years, he became Vice Chairman of the State Development Planning Commission, Vice Chairman and Deputy Party Secretary of SETC, as well as Chairman of SETC. He was put in charge of SASAC in 2003 and has provided valuable support to the OUHK for the launch in the mainland of two online programmes: Master of Business Administration and Master of Professional Accounting. Mr Li is a member of the National Committee of the Chinese People’s Political Consultative Conference and Vice Chairman of its Economic Affairs Subcommittee.

    Mr Liu Yichang, BBS, MH
    (Doctor of Letters, honoris causa)

    Mr Liu Yichang is a renowned Chinese novelist known for his role in nurturing local literary talent. Mr Liu graduated from Saint John’s University in Shanghai. He has worked as a journalist and editor for magazines and newspapers in Chongqing, Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur. In 1985, he founded Hong Kong Literature, a monthly magazine of which he was Editor-in-Chief until 2000. His role in introducing trends and works of Western literature and art, and in promoting literary writing through Hong Kong Literature and other publications has been instrumental to cultural development in Hong Kong. Mr Liu began writing novels in the 1930s and has published more than 30 books. His works have been translated into several foreign languages. The Drinker was hailed as the ‘first stream of consciousness novel in Hong Kong.’ His Novella Collection won a Biennial Award and his Intersection received a Recommendation Prize in the Fiction Category at the Fourth and Sixth Hong Kong Biennial Awards for Chinese Literature respectively. Mr Liu received a Medal of Honour and a Bronze Bauhinia Star from the HKSAR Government, and was named ‘Writer of the Year’ at the 2010 Hong Kong Book Fair. He is Honorary President of the Federation of Hong Kong Writers, Expert Adviser on Literary Arts for the Leisure and Cultural Services Department and an Honorary Professor of the OUHK.

    Dr Alice Piera Lam Lee Kiu-yue, GBS, JP
    (Doctor of Social Sciences, honoris causa)

    Dr Alice Piera Lam Lee Kiu-yue is known for her contributions to higher education in Hong Kong. In her nine years as Chairman of the University Grants Committee (UGC) from 1998 to 2007, sweeping changes were proposed that subsequently helped to spur the development of excellence in higher education and the internationalization of universities in Hong Kong with far-reaching consequences. Dr Lam is a successful banker and solicitor. She furthered her studies in law and qualified as a solicitor after receiving a Bachelor of Arts (Honours) degree from the University of Hong Kong. She then joined Hang Seng Bank where she has served for almost two decades in roles including General Manager, Deputy Chief Executive and Managing Director. She became Co-chairman of Sotheby’s Asia afterwards and is currently an Independent Non-executive Director of Perception Digital Holdings Limited. Dr Lam has been active in furthering the development of local education. She has served on the advisory board of the Lingnan Institute of Business Administration of CUHK, CUHK’s University Council and HKUST’s Council. She was also Chairman of the Education Commission and the first Chairman of the UGC’s Quality Assurance Council. She has been appointed Justice of the Peace and awarded a Gold Bauhinia Star. CUHK and Lingnan University both awarded her the honorary degree of Doctor of Laws.
