Over 6,300 graduates received their awards from the OUHK at the four sessions of its two-day congregation ceremony held on 21 and 22 December 2011 at the Queen Elizabeth Stadium, bringing the total number of OUHK graduates to well over 70,000. Graduates of 2011 included some 1,700 full-time students and 550 from mainland China. More than 50% received undergraduate degrees, and nearly 20% postgraduate awards. Presiding over the four sessions of the Congregation were Council Chairman Dr Eddy C Fong, Deputy Chairman Mr Edward Cheung and Treasurer Mr Michael Wong.

OUHK upholds the ideal of ’Education for All’

In his Congregation address, President of the OUHK Prof. John C Y Leong said the University has made every effort to uphold its ideal of ‘Education for All’ and has been successful in achieving it. He said that for many working adults who earlier missed the opportunity to enter university, the unique mode of distance education offered by the OUHK has made it possible to receive a university education leading to a full degree. The University’s full-time face-to-face programmes have been giving secondary school leavers who are unable to obtain a place in publicly funded institutions an opportunity to fulfil their aspirations for a university education. Its pure online programmes represent a study mode which can make university education available to an even wider spectrum of learners as it transcends the restrictions of time and physical location.

Prof. Leong said with the continuous development of society, one of the OUHK’s present targets is to implement blended learning, a thoughtful integration of different modes of learning in the same programme, so as to offer students a more flexible and effective learning experience.
