    President's message

photo The total number of OUHK graduates recently surpassed 70,000. This figure speaks well for the success the University has achieved in making education available to all. We are glad that we have helped learners fulfil their aspirations for higher education, through which they can advance their personal and career development.

In December 2011, about 6,300 students who graduated that year celebrated the conferring of awards with friends and members of the OUHK at our Twentieth Congregation. For some of them, the journey through higher education had been trying and long, but their strenuous efforts finally paid off. Seeing the joy and confidence on the graduates’ faces at that moment was most rewarding for us. It reminds us that we have to continue our mission with even greater determination and commitment.

At the congregation, we also conferred honorary Doctoral Degrees on four distinguished individuals who have made significant achievements in their fields and in the community. They are inspiring models for all of us and we welcome them warmly to the OUHK family.

In delivering on our commitment to make education available to all, we adopt the latest technologies to enhance teaching and learning. The Centre for Innovation (CFI) project stands as a good example. With the completion of the project recently, the virtual CFI now provides a 24x7 Web-based service delivery system for information dissemination and communication, an intelligent personalized learning environment and e-learning initiatives.

We continue to strengthen our links with educational institutions and organizations around the world to facilitate academic collaboration. In the past few months, we hosted visits by high-level education officials from Taiwan and Singapore, and received a delegation from the Shenzhen Open University. We also paid visits to several educational institutes in Zhuhai to explore collaboration opportunities.

The year 2012 will be eventful for the OUHK, with the construction of its New College and the implementation of the new curriculum under the ‘3+3+4’ system. Our Li Ka Shing Institute of Professional and Continuing Education will also celebrate its 20th anniversary this year and a series of activities to mark the anniversary has been planned.

English philosopher and author Francis Bacon once said, ‘Studies serve for delight, for ornament, and for ability.’ In the new year, let’s hope every one of us can find fulfilment in every area of our lives by learning continuously.
