    Emeritus President, entrepreneurs and conductor awarded honorary doctoral degrees

    Prof. Tam Sheung-wai (Doctor of Science, honoris causa )

    Prof. Tam Sheung-wai steered the OUHK to make major progress in its goal of becoming a regional leader in distance and adult learning when he served as President here from 1995 to 2003, and has been presented with several distinguished international awards. He has enhanced the quality and status of the University's distance learning programmes and made them available in various provinces in mainland China. Prof. Tam obtained the King Edward VII Scholarship to study science at the University of Hong Kong (HKU), and completed his doctoral studies at the University of Nottingham. He joined the Chinese University of Hong Kong (CUHK) as a lecturer in organic chemistry and has served in various senior management positions of the University. He is now Chairman of the Ping Wo Fund Advisory Committee and the CWM/Nethersole Fund.

    Dato' Dr Cheng Yu-tung (Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa )

    New World Development and Chow Tai Fook Enterprises Ltd Chairman Dr Cheng Yu-tung is highly respected for not only his business success but also his contributions to education. He supported the introduction of a three-year MBA programme at CUHK, subsidized medical training for postgraduate students from mainland China at HKU, and established a foundation with the medical schools of HKU and Tsinghua University to promote academic exchange. He and Dr Lee Shau-kee jointly donated money to support the CUHK-Yale South China Studies Programme, and his New World Development Company Ltd partnered with CUHK to build a teaching hotel to nurture future leaders in the field.

    Dr Lee Shau-kee (Doctor of Business Administration, honoris causa )

    Henderson Land Development Company founder Dr Lee Shau-kee has made a substantial contribution to the economy of Hong Kong in the last 50 years, and is well known for his support for educational development. He has been a member of the advisory boards of the CUHK's MBA programme, the Hong Kong Polytechnic University and the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology, and has made generous contributions to universities and educational institutions in Hong Kong and other regions. His commitment to education is also evidenced by the Pei Hua Education Foundation he established with several friends to support educational and training initiatives in mainland China, as well as the scholarships he set up at Wadham College, Oxford University, which enable outstanding students from Hong Kong to study there.

    Ms Yip Wing-sie, JP (Doctor of Letters, honoris causa )

    Hong Kong Sinfonietta Music Director and Guangzhou Symphony Orchestra Principal Guest Conductor Ms Yip Wing-sie is a highly respected and influential figure in Asia's orchestral music scene. Positions she has held include the Ong Teng Cheong Distinguished Visiting Professor at the Yong Siew Toh Conservatory of Music, National University of Singapore, and Resident Conductor of the Hong Kong Philharmonic Orchestra. She won first prize and the Golden Harp Award in the Besançon International Young Conductors Competition in France and a prize in the Tokyo International Conducting Competition, and was named one of Hong Kong's Ten Outstanding Young Persons in 1990. She has collaborated with such renowned artists as Augustin Dumay, Fou Ts'ong, Shlomo Mintz, Anne-Sophie Mutter, Itzhak Perlman and Pinchas Zukerman.
