CBMP graduation ceremony and donation boost

The 4th Capacity Building Mileage Programme Graduation Ceremony held in Baptist University's Academic Hall on 16 May was graced with the presence of Secretary for Labour and Welfare Mr Matthew Cheung, GBS, JP and more than 300 graduates. 'Participants of the programme may pursue their studies through radio programmes or face-to-face courses run by district organizations. Not only can they build up knowledge in different areas, they can also form a network of support for each other,' explained Mr Cheung. Since the pilot launch of the programme in 2004, with $12 million from the Lotteries Fund, enrolment numbers have already exceeded 23,000. The Government has set aside another $11 million to run the programme from 2007 to 2010, which was recently boosted by donations from the Padma and Hari Harilela Student Financial Assistance Scheme Fund, as well as donations from Mr Wilfred Ng, JP, and Mr Raymond Lee, BBS. Dr Hari Harilela, GBS, OBE, JP attended the cheque presentation ceremony on 29 July. The programme is jointly organized by LiPACE, the Women's Commission and Commercial Radio to promote learning among women.

Wine assessment programme gets thumbs up from students

LiPACE's Professional Diploma in Wine Assessment and Services programme, launched in 2004 in collaboration with the Concord Institute of Wine, is the first of its kind offered in Hong Kong. Kurt Wong, supervisor of the Food and Beverage Department at the Inter-continental Grand Stanford Hotel, enrolled in the programme after a referral from a friend and has recently obtained the WSET (Wine & Spirit Education Trust) Level 3 Certificate. 'Now that I know more about wines from different countries as well as their types and features, I can make better recommendations to guests. The WSET qualification I obtained is definitely a plus for my career development,' he said.
