OUHK inaugurates first integrated teaching centre for general, mental and Chinese medicinal nursing

The OUHK's $11-million Clinical Nursing Education Centre opened on 26 May to provide advanced computer-simulated training to nursing students. It is the first local simulation centre for holistic nursing education, incorporating the educational elements of general, mental and Chinese medicinal nursing education. Apart from providing nursing education, the Centre is also an ideal venue for health-related research and academic activities.

While the Lee Hysan Nursing Skills Education Unit in the Centre is equipped with human models and nursing care equipment and facilities for teaching basic clinical nursing skills, the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital Clinical Simulation Education Unit is furnished with different types of simulators, control racks and recording systems for advanced and interactive nursing skills training, as well as assessment of the nursing and clinical competency of students.

In addition, there are two other learning zones in the Centre, namely, the Chinese Medicinal Nursing Education Unit and the Virtual Reality Education Unit. The former is furnished with a human acupuncture simulator and related facilities for massage, cupping and moxibustion training; and the latter is outfitted with computers and virtual training equipment which allow learners to interact with virtual patients within full 3-D scen-arios.

OUHK President Prof. John C Y Leong thanked the Lee Hysan Foundation and Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital for their $3 million and $2.5 million donations. In recognition of their contributions, the Nursing Skills Education Unit and Clinical Simulation Education Unit have been named after the two organizations respectively.

Speaking at the Centre's inauguration ceremony, Dr Walton Li, Medical Superintendent of the Hong Kong Sanatorium & Hospital, emphasized that the Hospital and the OUHK had joined hands to train registered degree nurses since 2005. With an aging population and growing public concern for health, the community's higher expectations of health care professionals have made their job responsibilities more diverse and significant.

Dr Deanna Lee Rudgard, Governor of the Lee Hysan Foundation, said that globalization had pulled many nursing professionals away from their home countries. She called on OUHK nursing students to stay in Hong Kong after their graduation to contribute to the community.
