    President's Message

The cover story of this issue of Openlink is the accreditation of our two full-time nursing degree programmes by the Nursing Council of Hong Kong, which came just three weeks after the opening of our $11-million Clinical Nursing Education Centre, the first integrated teaching centre for general, mental and Chinese medicinal nursing in Hong Kong. With this stamp of approval from the Council, our first batch of full-time nursing students will become registered nurses when they graduate in 2009. An additional 1,100-plus enrolled nurses have also become registered nurses after obtaining our Higher Diploma in Nursing or Higher Diploma in Mental Health Nursing through part-time studies since 2004.

Apart from these two very popular nursing programmes, we have also received over 3,000 applications for direct enrolment to 20-plus full-time programmes. In addition, about 270 students have been selected among 5,000 applicants through the Government's Joint University Programmes Admissions System to join seven full-time programmes. We have also admitted 30 high school graduates in various provinces of mainland China, from as far away as Heilongjiang and Guizhou.

With the Campus Phase II about to be completed, there will be great improvements in our facilities for the increasing full-time student population. In the meantime, more exchange activities have been organized for full-time students to help broaden their horizons, such as the English immersion and Global Citizenship programmes this summer which are reported on in this issue.

While our full-time programmes are developing steadily, distance learning is still the mainstay of our education provision. In order to give interested individuals a taste of distance learning and guidance on how to embark on part-time studies, we organized two Preparatory Workshops and some try-out courses in July and August.

Following the successful launch of our first online Master of Laws in Chinese Business Law (Business Applications) last year, the programme can be studied in English starting from this October. The coming semester will also see the launch of a Master of Education in Drama and Language Education, a Master of Arts in Legal Translation, and a Bachelor of Arts (Hons) in Creative Writing and Film Arts programme. More details about these programmes are available from the OUHK's website.
