OUHK receives best project awards at ICT conference

The 2008 International Conference on ICT in Teaching and Learning, organized by the OUHK and Hong Kong Web Symposium on 7-8 July, was another resounding success. The theme of this year's conference was 'Technology-enriched learning spaces' and showcased innovative pedagogical practices using technology, as well as serving as a forum for discussion and demonstration among teachers, practitioners and researchers. Despite the torrential rain and thunderstorms, this year's conference welcomed 270 enthusiastic participants from countries all over the world, including Italy, Japan, the UK, the USA, India, Australia, the Philippines and, of course, Hong Kong and mainland China.

Two highly-respected keynote speakers, Prof. Fred Lockwood of Manchester Metropolitan University, UK, and Prof. Bebo White of Stanford University, USA, also helped to make this conference one to remember. Both keynote speakers provided insightful, inspiring addresses and workshops on Web 2.0 applications and developing quality e-learning activities that will surely serve to motivate conference participants in their present and future teaching and research. In addition to keynote addresses and a variety of parallel presentations on both days of the conference, workshops focusing on such relevant topics as Opensource courseware, guided learning materials development and the use of e-learning platforms were open to all attendees.

This year's conference marked the first time a 'Demo Fest' was organized for researchers and developers to display their groundbreaking e-learning projects to all conference participants. Presenters demonstrated and discussed their projects with attendees, while competing for the title of 'Best Project' for institution and student. The calibre of the e-learning projects presented was extremely high. Conference participants and panel judges voted to award Miss Eva Tsang of the OUHK's Educational Technology and Publishing Unit as the winner of 'Best Project (institution)', and Ben Suen, who is a full-time Year 1 student of the University, as the winner of 'Best Project (student)'. Ben's project was on an e-portfolio (an innovative teaching strategy), which he completed under the guidance of Associate Professors Dr Philip Tsang and Dr Paul Kwok of the School of Science and Technology.
