Graduates making their contribution in various fields

Terrence Lo joined Hang Seng Bank with graduates of other local universities as a financial services trainee last autumn. They had to attend training sessions for three months to learn about the bank's services and products before being posted to various branches to familiarize themselves with operations. He is grateful that his OUHK studies have provided him with solid knowledge in banking and finance as well as skills in doing presentations and attending job interviews. 'That I learned at the OUHK may not be directly applicable in the workplace. But the essence of a university education is the development of analytical thinking to get us better prepared for the challenges of the world today,' he said.

Alice Tsang joined the OUHK in 2003 after spending one semester in an associate degree class at a local community college. 'I found the small but fully equipped OUHK campus a better learning environment,' she said. During her study, she worked part-time as a bank clerk and boutique sales girl to earn her living as well as gain work experience. Alice obtained her degree last year and got several job offers. She is now a company secretary trainee with the audit firm Morison Heng, and plans to start her Master of Corporate Governance programme by distance learning at the OUHK this year to become a qualified company secretary in two years.

Peggy Wong is now the public relations coordinator of Metropark Hotel Kowloon. She is delighted that knowledge gained from her OUHK studies has given her a good foundation for her present job. 'For example, we learned a lot about advertising and survey design in the courses Marketing Communications and Marketing Research . This came in very useful when I worked on promotional material for Christmas and a questionnaire to gather feedback from customers,' she said. A graduate of the Higher Diploma in Marketing of the School of Continuing and Professional Studies of the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Peggy studied for one year at the OUHK to get her BBA in Marketing.

Sergio Yang obtained 15 Pass Ones and three Pass Twos as well as two scholarships during his studies at the OUHK. He had good HKCEE results but chose to enter the OUHK to get a degree as soon as possible after Form 6 to relieve the financial burden of his father, whose business was not doing well. Now a Customer Services Officer with China Airlines, Sergio said he treasured very much his three years of university life, which had given him not only rigorous academic training but also exchange opportunities to broaden his horizons. 'What I learned at the OUHK has made me much smarter in managing my personal finances,' he said.
