    Environmental Protection in Modern Society

    Important Note
    This course will be taught through a part-time face-to-face mode. Lectures will be scheduled on weekday evenings, Saturdays or Sundays.

    ENVR S830F Environmental Protection in Modern Society is a course designed by the School of Science and Technology for the postgraduate programmes in Environmental Studies, and Liberal Studies. This course covers aspects of environmental control, monitoring and assessment, as well as the philosophical perspective on environmental protection. Students will be led to participate in lectures, field experiments and workshops interactively in order to comprehend contemporary knowledge on relevant topics. A mini-project will be conducted to enhance students’ technical skills in environmental research and community participation.

    This course aims to:

    • Introduce, examine and analyse the philosophy, theories and applications of environmental protection;

    • Provide students with integrated knowledge and skills in practising environmental protection and sustainable development in contemporary society;

    • Train students to use their independent analytical abilities in actualizing environmental protection and sustainable development at the local, regional and global levels.

    The course covers the following topics:

    • Ecology, ecosystems and human beings

    • Conflicts between environmental protection and development and their outcomes

    • Global, regional and local environmental issues in the contemporary world

    • Environmental ethics and environmental education

    • Control and regulatory measures of environmental pollution

    • Environmental policies and legislation in Hong Kong and mainland China

    • Fundamentals of environmental impact assessment (EIA)

    • Environmental protection in regional and strategic perspectives

    • Heading towards sustainable development

    Course assessment will be divided between continuous assessment (50%) and a final examination (50%). Continuous assessment will include two assignments and a mid-term quiz. A three-hour final examination will be conducted at the end of the course.

    Both the continuous assessment and the final examination will give due emphasis to the important critical abilities required in writing about and discussing contemporary environmental issues. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
