    Important notes
    This course will be taught through a face-to-face postgraduate mode commencing in January 2020. Lectures and tutorials will be scheduled for weekday evenings or Saturdays.

    This course is designed to introduce the nature of legal translation and to lay a solid foundation for its practice. Translation will also be taught from the perspectives of drafting and statutory interpretation. Students will have practice in the translation of Cantonese witness statements, statutes and judgments. Students who take this course must understand Cantonese.

    Upon completion of the course, students should be able to:

    • Analyse the basic nature and features of legal translation;

    • Apply theoretical knowledge and strategies effectively to handle translation problems;

    • Translate legal texts, using the skills and techniques covered in the course;

    • Carry out research in the field of legal translation.

    This course introduces students to the history of the translation of statutes and judgments, and some of the major approaches to legal translation. It also examines the linguistic and interpretation problems inherent in legal translation from the angles of drafting and statutory interpretation, as well as from linguistic points of view. It will help students to build up basic skills and techniques for translating legal texts.

    The course covers the following topics:

    • History of legal translation

    • Features of legal translation

    • Problems in legal translation

    • Solutions

    • Translation of Cantonese witness statements

    • Translation of statutes

    • Translation of judgments

    Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).

    Contact hours
    Two and a half hours per week.
