Eighty soldiers and officers from the People's Liberation Army (PLA) Hong Kong Garrison, led by Deputy Commander Major General Chen Weizhan, paid their first visit to the OUHK on 15 November.

During his address at the welcoming ceremony, President Prof. John C Y Leong praised the PLA for shouldering the responsibility of defending Hong Kong, and assisting in the maintenance of public order and disaster relief work, as well as for gaining the friendship and respect of the people of Hong Kong through active participation in public welfare activities. Students' Union President Mr Delison Chan welcomed the delegation on behalf of the students.

pla Major General Chen said that the average age of new recruits to the army this year is 19.4, more or less the same as the average age of OUHK students. The new recruits had decided to join the army to defend their country, giving up their opportunities to enter university studies in the process. 'Their visit here is very meaningful, as I believe that the soldiers will have a chance to experience the happiness of university life and take away poignant memories from their visit,' he said.

pla Afterwards, the PLA delegation attended a psychology lecture given by Associate Professor of the School of Arts and Social Sciences Dr Cheuk Wai-hing, in which Dr Cheuk raised several social psychology questions about the techniques of borrowing money. The soldiers showed great interest in the lecture and actively took part in the discussion. Following the lecture, the delegation later visited the campus and participated in two exciting and fierce basketball matches with the Student Basketball Society, staff members and students.

The next day, about 360 teachers and students from the OUHK and 11 other local tertiary institutions visited the Ngong Shuen Chau Barracks, where they had the opportunity to interact with the troops and learn more about their military facilities.
