Five institutions join hands to develop sharing platform for e-library service

The OUHK and four other local self-financed tertiary institutions will collaboratively develop a sharing platform for e-library service with a $50 million grant from the Quality Enhancement Support Scheme (QESS) under the Government's Self-financing Post-secondary Education Fund.

A launch ceremony for the project was held on 29 October at the OUHK campus. (From left) Tung Wah College President Prof. Thomas Wong, Chu Hai College of Higher Education President Prof. Chang Chung-nan, Convenor of the Sub-committee on QESS Mr Herbert Hui, OUHK President Prof. John C Y Leong, Principal Assistant Secretary (Further Education) Ms Pecvin Yong, Caritas Institute of Higher Education President Prof. Reggie Kwan, and Hong Kong Shue Yan University Associate Vice President (Quality Assurance) Mr Aman Shah officiated at the ceremony.

mok During a briefing session, OUHK Librarian Mrs Mok Wong Wai-man introduced the arrangements for the implementation of the three-year project, which will commence in January 2014. An online collection-sharing and information discovery system will be developed to enable faculty members and students to easily find and access the library and e-book collections among the five libraries through a one-stop search interface. Given its greater experience in systems development, the OUHK will take up the responsibility of developing the new systems and platforms, while the other participating institutions will upgrade their systems in order to integrate into the new system.

The OUHK will lead efforts to coordinate the purchase of new e-books according to the needs of the individual participating libraries. This will allow each of these libraries to enrich their digital content and promote reading at their respective institution. It is expected that more than 20,000 e-books will be acquired through the new collaborative sharing system.

The presidents of all of the participating institutions welcome other institutions to join the sharing platform, provided that they can fulfil the conditions of sharing resources and that their systems have been well-developed. The presidents hope that such participation will benefit more students and help to boost the sustainable development of post-secondary education in Hong Kong.
