Legal language and legal translation seminar

legal The 2013 Legal Language and Legal Translation Seminar co-organized by the School of Arts and Social Sciences and the Hong Kong Institute of Legal Translation (HKILT) was held on 12 October on the OUHK campus, and was well-attended by over 200 participants.

Mr Roderick Woo Bun, former President of the Law Society of Hong Kong and former Privacy Commissioner for Personal Data, kicked off the ceremony and spoke on 'The Personal Data (Privacy) Ordinance and Its Language.' Mr Bun discussed how he drafted the Ordinance and the wordings he had considered so as to give the audience an intriguing insight into the various aspects of legal drafting. The inspiring speech was followed by an appealing oration on 'The Language of the Law' delivered by the Hon. Mr Justice Kemal Bokhary, Non-permanent Judge of the Court of Final Appeal. This was the first time that he spoke publicly about the language of the law, though his judgments are well-known for their elegance and incontestability. Through his elucidation of common law, the legislation and the constitution, he illustrated how 'effective law is dependent on communication distinguished by a particularly apt use of words.' Dr Emily Poon, Associate Professor of the OUHK and Vice Chairlady of the HKILT, concluded the seminar with her speech on 'The Translation of Witness Statements,' in which she talked about 'legal equivalence' in the study of legal translation.
