Understanding the testing and certification industry from an engineering perspective

Following the success of the first Testing and Certification Day held last November, the School of Science and Technology again organized the event this year and received an enthusiastic response from the industry and the general public. The event, attended by over 300 people, was held on 26 October on campus and included a seminar, a career exhibition and a briefing session on the related academic programmes.

At the 'Seminar on Testing and Certification: From an Engineering Perspective,' eminent industry professionals and representatives from the related departments of the Government were invited to share their views on the latest developments, as well as the career prospects in the industry, from an engineering perspective. Among those in attendance were Legislative Councillor (Engineering Constituency) Ir Dr Lo Wai-kwok, Chief Structural Engineer of the Housing Department Development and Construction Division Ir Joseph Mak, and Electrical and Mechanical Engineer of the Electrical and Mechanical Services Department Energy Efficiency Office Ir Sam Choi. On the same occasion, the OUHK appointed Dr Lo as our Honorary Professor, hoping to further optimize the University's testing and certification programmes with the help of Dr Lo's professional knowledge and extensive experience.

Moreover, a career exhibition was organized in which the public could learn more about the industry through the information and enquiry service provided by the Hong Kong Council for Testing and Certification, Hong Kong Standards and Testing Centre, SGS Hong Kong Limited and other participating organizations.

An information seminar introducing the relevant academic programmes on offer was also arranged on the same day. In recent years, the OUHK has launched distance learning, part-time face-to-face and full-time face-to-face programmes in testing and certification at both the undergraduate and postgraduate levels for aspiring learners. The OUHK Jubilee College on Chung Hau Street, which is expected to be completed by early 2014, will be equipped with laboratories with a wide range of advanced testing instruments to provide a better learning environment for students enrolled on these programmes.
