    President's message

president On 14 November, the University celebrated the grand opening of the new Kwai Hing Learning Centre in a ceremony with Secretary for Education Mr Eddie Ng Hak-kim as our Guest of Honour. In order to offer our students a better learning environment and to facilitate the continuous development of LiPACE, the new Centre features a complete range of facilities and learning resources. The new 4-storey Centre can now accommodate 1,500 students with its spacious study environment and purpose-built teaching and learning facilities. It also houses the LiPACE headquarters and is conveniently accessible by public transportation. The development of the Kwai Hing Learning Centre is another example of the OUHK's ongoing commitment to providing education for all aspiring learners, and we are honoured to receive Mr Ng's compliment that the OUHK is playing a vital role in improving the quality of manpower resources in Hong Kong.

The OUHK distinguishes itself through its devotion to open education. Recently, we have joined hands with four other self-financed institutions to develop a sharing platform for e-library services, enabling all of our staff and students to easily find and access the library and e-book collections at each of the five participating libraries. Furthermore, the OUHK has recently completed the development of four mobile learning modules, thereby providing another mode of study for learners to study in environments without fixed Internet access or facilities.

The success of the OUHK lies greatly in the support we receive from community members who share our belief in 'Education for All.' This past month, four distinguished individuals were honoured for their contributions to the OUHK at the annual Honorary University Fellowship Presentation Ceremony. We were also privileged to receive a visit from 80 soldiers and officials from the People's Liberation Army Hong Kong Garrison, who expressed their great respect for the University in its efforts to provide educational opportunities and to nurture a pool of talent for the workforce.

We are also very honoured that Dr Charles Lee Yeh-kwong, former OUHK Council Chairman, has been appointed by the Chief Executive of the Hong Kong SAR as the Pro-Chancellor of the OUHK for a period of three years with effect from 1 November. He has also been appointed as an ex-officio member of the Court of the OUHK together with 11 individuals appointed as members on the same day.

Finally, this November we have kicked-off our Silver Jubilee Anniversary celebrations, which will last for the entire year. The theme of this year's celebrations is 'Multi-mode Education, Infinite Potential.' A wide array of activities are in the pipeline as part of the celebrations. I cordially invite each and every one of you to join us and share in the joy and fun!
