This is a 5-credit postgraduate-level course. It is a core course of the Master of Arts in Creative Industries and Cultural Assets programme. The course aims to increase students’ understanding of animation both as an art form and as an industry. Students will learn to appreciate and analyse the traditions, styles and aesthetics of animation. Also, the business practices of animation and its related industries as well as alternative applications will be discussed. By understanding the key changes and contexts in different periods of the development of animation, students will learn to analyse the future of animation.

The course covers the following topics:

    • History and development of animation: Comics, animation and games
    • Types of animation
    • Forms, styles and aesthetics of animation
    • Animation and visual culture in the East and the West
    • Animation: From art to business
    • Alternative applications and future development of animation

Assessment is based on students’ performance in continuous assessment components including (1) class exercises and presentations, (2) a quiz, (3) a mid-term project, and (4) a final project and oral presentation. These components are worth 30%, 10%, 20% and 40% of the total marks for the course respectively. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
