    Management Issues for Global Managers

    Course Coordinator: Dr Emmy VAN ESCH, BSc, MSc (Tilburg University); MA (CUHK); PhD (HKBU)

    This course aims to provide students with opportunities to broaden and deepen their knowledge of concepts and theories in the study of international management. It also aims to enhance students’ skills in proposing solutions to issues and problems that may arise in international management contexts. This course further aims to develop students’ cultural sensitivity which will prepare them for professional and managerial positions in an international business environment.

    The course covers the following topics:

    • Globalisation and the changing business environment

    • Understanding the role of culture in global firms

    • Communicating across culture

    • Cross-cultural conflict and negotiation

    • Managing expatriate assignments

    • Staffing, training, and compensation in global firms

    • Motivating in global firms

    • Leading in global firms

    • E-business management

    • Social and ethical responsibilities of global firms

    Contact hours
    Normally three hours per week.

    Assessment consists of four assignments, class participation and oral presentation. The four assignments account for 70% of the total course score, the class participation accounts for 10% of the total course score, and the oral presentation accounts for the remaining 20% of the total course score. All the assignments, class participation and oral presentation are individual assessments. Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
