  • Bachelor of English Language Studies with Honours
    Introduction

    The Bachelor of English Language Studies with Honours is a four-year programme. Applicants can apply for admission to Year 1 or Senior Year.

    Year 1 entry   Programme code: BLSEHJ1
    Senior year entry*   Programme code: BLSEHJS
    * Applicants will be considered for admission to different years of the study programme depending on individual academic merits and other relevant factors.

    Students whose mother tongue is not Chinese or whose secondary school education was completed overseas or in International Schools do not need to meet the Chinese language requirement.

    Entry Requirement

     

    Aims

    This programme aims to develop in its graduates a high level of English proficiency and in-depth knowledge and understanding of English linguistics and applied English linguistics. The courses in the programme are designed to enhance students’ ability to communicate in both written and spoken English and to enable them to use and appreciate the English language.

    Career prospects

    Graduates of this programme will also be eligible to take up general administrative and executive work in the civil service, non-government organizations, business or industry sectors and other positions for university graduates.

    Local and non-local secondary school graduates who meet the requirements of the Education Bureau (EDB) can apply for the ‘Scholarship for Prospective English Teachers’ set up by the EDB. Please check the following website for details http://www.edb.gov.hk/index.aspx?nodeID=7746&langno=1

    Professional recognition

    The degree is recognized by the Education Bureau as a language major degree (English) and those who also complete a teacher’s qualification (majoring in English language teaching) after graduation will be fully qualified to become English language teachers in Hong Kong and will be exempted from the Language Proficiency Assessment for Teachers of English.

    Further studies

    Many opportunities are available for graduates of the programme to undertake postgraduate studies in Hong Kong and overseas. Some students will continue to study for a Master’s degree by coursework or by research after graduation. Those who wish to enter the teaching profession can pursue the Postgraduate Diploma in Education either on a full-time or part-time basis.
