    Important notes
    This course will be taught via face-to-face mode commencing in January 2020. This is a core course for the Master of Social Sciences in International Economics and Development.

    The course aims to provide students with advanced and practical training in the skills required for conducting research and scholarly interaction. This course consists of an independent research project or dissertation that will be prepared by each student individually through ongoing consultation with the project/dissertation supervisor(s). The expected length of the project/dissertation is 10,000–12,000 words. The research project / dissertation is to be written in English.

    The course covers the following topics:

    • Identifying the research topic

    • Reviewing the relevant literature

    • Preparing a proper research proposal

    • Collecting primary data

    • Analysing research data

    • Preparing and submitting the first draft of the research project/dissertation

    • Presenting the research findings at the seminar

    • Preparing and submitting the final version of the research project/dissertation

    Contact hours
    The class will meet at the beginning of the course to deal with various practical issues, and at the end of the course, when students will present their research projects in a seminar setting. However, students are expected to attend regular consultation meetings with the supervisor(s) throughout the duration of the course.


    Components Weighting
    Research proposal 30%
    Research proposal -- oral presentation 10%
    Final research project -- oral presentation 10%
    Final research project / dissertation 50%
    Total 100%

    Students are required to submit assignments via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
