OSH student wins championship in project competition

Wong Kin-yip, who is studying for a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Safety and Health jointly offered by LiPACE and Middlesex University (UK), won the 2014 Hong Kong Institute of Engineers Student Project Competition at Bachelor’s degree level. It was the third time that the Institute has earned a place in this competition, but Kin-yip is the first LiPACE student to become champion. Kin-yip’s winning project is entitled ‘To Evaluate the Safety Controls for Various Hazards in Marine Construction Work’.

Commercial Photography graduate awarded Best News Photograph

A work by Rayman Cheuk was recognized as the ‘Best News Photograph’ at the Hong Kong In-media Awards ceremony held last year. A graduate of LiPACE Professional Diploma in Commercial Photography, Rayman is currently working as a freelance photographer. The programme provides students with professional knowledge of producing quality images with a strong emphasis on fieldwork and critical thinking. The winning work is a fine demonstration of what Rayman learned from the programme.

    Investor Education Day 2015

The Investor Education Day 2015, jointly organized by LiPACE and the Investor Education Centre of Securities and Futures Commission, was held on 31 January at the Jockey Club Auditorium of the OUHK Jubilee College. The event is now in its 13th consecutive year. The three speeches delivered focused on the theme of stock investment and asset allocation. Mr Patrick Pun, Vice Chairman of the Hong Kong Institute of Financial Analysts and Professional Commentators Ltd gave a speech on the ‘Impact of Stock Connect on Hong Kong Investors and the Local Market’, investment advisor Mr Alan Luk covered the ‘2015 Investment Landscape’, and ‘Asset Allocation Strategies’ was the topic chosen by Mr Bruno Lee, Chairman of the Hong Kong Investment Funds Association. The Q&A session was hosted by President of Tung Wah College Prof. Lui Yu-hon. The event attracted over 350 participants.

    Learning outside the classroom

LiPACE’s diverse tourism-related programmes emphasize learning through both theory and practice. Recently, students from the Higher Diplomas in Tourism and Hospitality Studies and in Tourism and Airline Studies, as well as the Yi Jin Diplomas in Tourism and Hotel Studies and in Tourism and Airline Services deepened their understanding of the industry through a range of out-of-classroom learning activities. These included visits to luxury hotels and the Civil Aviation Department, a career development seminar offered by Disneyland and even a wine-tasting class.

    LiPACE new programmes

Higher Diploma in High-fashion Design and Styling

The programme is designed for students who aspire to a career in veterinary nursing or animal care/welfare in various sectors. In addition to classroom teaching, students will participate in a 540-hour practicum in animal clinics or relevant institutions. Apart from practical skills, students are also taught to take into account other technical, ethical and social factors when providing veterinary care. Graduates will be eligible to apply for Associate Membership of the Hong Kong Veterinary Association.

Higher Diploma in Resort and Theme Park Management

On 1 August LiPACE held the fourth Graduation Ceremony of the OUHK Elder Academy at the Serena Yang Lecture Theatre. The ceremony was again attended by Secretary for Labour and Welfare Mr Matthew Cheung, who joined Vice-Chairman of the Elderly Commission Dr Lam Ching-choi, President Prof. Yuk-shan Wong, President of the BCT Third Age Academy Ms Lau Ka-shi and LiPACE Director Prof. Lui Yu-hon in officiating at the ceremony. This year, certificates were presented to 49 elderly graduates in recognition of their hard work and perseverance. Student volunteers from LiPACE’s full-time programmes were recruited to take up the role of Master of Ceremonies and to act as receptionists at the ceremony.

Higher Diploma in Occupational Health and Safety

The programme aims to equip students with professional knowledge and skills in occupational health and safety in various industries. Upon completion of the programme, students should be able to comply with relevant legislation and to assess common workplace hazards with recommendations on control measures. Each graduate will receive a certificate in Mandatory Basic Safety Training (Construction Work) and will also be given priority to study for a BSc (Hons) in Occupational Safety, Health and Environment jointly offered by LiPACE and Middlesex University, UK.
