Vice President Prof. Lee Wing-on shares his new-century management philosophy

Prof. Lee Wing-on’s appointment as Vice President (Administration and Development) at the OUHK in late 2014 could hardly be more fitting. He has spent the past five years researching 21st century education and learning skills in Singapore, and among his findings was the fact that lifelong learning is key to the long-term development of a society. Prof. Lee is therefore aptly placed to take on this role. ‘The OUHK has always been dedicated to the provision of lifelong education. I am proud to become part of this vibrant team and look forward to putting my research into practice,’ he explained.

Prof. Lee also observes that teamwork has an ever more important role to play nowadays, both at school and in the workplace, adding that ‘the drive and efficiency of the OUHK staff is a demonstration of good teamwork.’ Before taking up his new role, he was impressed with the OUHK’s student enrollment, smooth and efficient operation and wide diversity of programmes. ‘This is clearly the result of the collaborative effort of the staff,’ he said.

Prof. Lee now oversees the operation of six units: Educational Technology and Publishing, Human Resources, Finance, Information Technology, Public Affairs and Facilities Management, which form an integrated administrative system at the University. He notes that a positive working environment is characterized by creativity, collaboration and an emphasis on work-life balance. He believes in human-based management and will continue to cultivate an atmosphere conducive to better teamwork and a pleasant work culture.

Inspired by an enthusiastic teacher during his secondary school years, Prof. Lee decided to become a teacher himself and has never left the field of education. Despite his numerous accolades in teaching and research, he humbly insists that there is always room for improvement.

Prof. Lee’s ‘hobby’ is writing academic papers based on his work. With flexibility and interactivity as the new cornerstones of 21st century teaching, Prof. Lee is now considering doing a study on the development of the OUHK’s own innovative, multi-mode education, in addition to carrying out his duties as Vice President.
