Expert external examiners ensure academic quality

Since its establishment, the OUHK has maintained stringent programme approval and revalidation procedures to ensure academic quality. As part of the quality assurance mechanism, external academics and professionals are invited to serve as external examiners to keep programme standards at a high level.

Prof. Florence Van Iat Kio (right), President of Kiang Wu Nursing College of Macau has been serving as an external examiner for the OUHK’s nursing programmes since 2010. She considers the programmes to have achieved university standards in terms of content design, evaluation methods as well as assessment criteria.

‘The curriculum is in line with the reality of the working environment,’ Prof. Van explained. ‘Students receive a solid grounding on frontline duties through various types of educational activities.’ She commented favourably on OUHK students, such as on their knowledge of initial health assessment, proper patient care, as well as their standard of English. Their performance in doing assignments particularly impressed her. ‘One of the assignments is a case study requiring the students to give professional nursing advice. The students were able to consider the case from physical, psychological and social perspectives and suggest useful advice. This demonstrates a broad understanding of the multiple issues relating to nursing and an ability to analyse and attend to the diverse needs of individuals.’

Prof. Iris Lee (left), Associate Professor of the Nethersole School of Nursing of the Chinese University of Hong Kong also joined the OUHK as an external examiner of nursing programmes in 2010. Prof. Lee observes that the programmes continue to evolve on the basis of a well-established mechanism. ‘The OUHK imposes stringent standards to ensure quality,’ she said. ‘Faculty members continually monitor whether the course design is in line with the set objectives, whether the content has covered all the areas of the real working environment, and whether the assessment criteria have been strictly followed.’

What impressed Prof. Lee the most was a project to overhaul and update course materials. ‘The team carefully designed thought-provoking activities to inspire students and adopted more effective methods to prudently assess their professional skills. The materials underwent a thorough review process and turned out to be very successful.’ She said the recommendations made by the external examiners are also well respected and considered with improvements adopted that further enhance the quality of the programmes.
