    President's message

As the Year of the Goat begins, I would like to extend my belated but most sincere wishes to you all, and to share the University view of the coming year.

The University is currently forging ahead in five directions. Firstly, the OUHK has been allocated more than one third of the available places in the Government’s Study Subsidy Scheme for Designated Professions, which has given us a hearty dose of determination to further develop our full-time programmes and enhance student support services. Last year, the OUHK obtained a total of nearly $18 million in research funding from the Research Grants Council. In addition to the many research projects currently underway, the University is also planning to set up dedicated research centres in specific areas. Thirdly, as always we continue to develop new programmes. One of the highlights will be the Master’s programme in Chinese medicinal nursing, the first of its kind in Hong Kong, to be launched later this year. In keeping with the open universities’ values of accessibility of education for all, we will tackle the rising trend of MOOCs and pursue further developments in open education. Last but not least, the Sheung Shing Street project is another goal we are striving towards.

Looking back to this time last year, Jubilee College had just opened, offering full-time programmes in nursing, creative arts, and testing and certification with more than 2,000 student places. In upcoming issues of Openlink, we will take a more in depth look at each of these programmes to paint a picture of the University’s efforts in these areas, beginning with the nursing programmes in this issue. In addition to looking at the development of nursing at OUHK over time, the feature story also includes interviews with external examiners, alumni and students, giving different perspectives on the delivery and quality of these courses.

The annual Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon is a major event in the city. This year I was honoured to be invited to take part in the Leaders Cup, competing with dozens of community leaders and raising funds for several welfare organizations. Although the competition is not comparable to the marathon race itself, it is still a challenge for those of us who are not top athletes! It requires one hundred per cent determination and effort to be successful. From top champions to humble amateurs, every runner should try their utmost to succeed in their own personal race. Likewise, I wish for all of our students to complete their studies and create their future in this spirit of sportsmanship and perseverance.
