    President's message

PresidentAs 2014 draws to a close and the weather turns chilly, the OUHK is still filled with warmth and liveliness as it has been a year of abundance for the University.

The opening of Kwai Hing Learning Centre in November last year marked the beginning of a year-long celebration of the University's Silver Jubilee Anniversary, and the last quarter was the climax of the festivities. We were honoured and exhilarated to have Mo Yan, the first Chinese Nobel Laureate in Literature, visit the OUHK, and speak at a public lecture entitled 'Hallucinatory Realism and Contemporary Chinese Literature'. He also met with a group of our students to discuss ideas and secrets to success in creative writing. That evening, he attended our dinner reception with local cultural and academic figures, a grand occasion for both the OUHK and the Hong Kong literary scene.

The 25th Anniversary Banquet was another spotlight event. We were delighted to have the Chief Secretary for Administration, Mrs Carrie Lam, as the guest of honour; in fact over 600 guests, staff, students and alumni gathered together that evening. It was a special occasion as nearly all former Presidents and Council Chairmen were at the banquet to wish the OUHK a bright future as it moves towards a new era.

Since the beginning of the year, the University has taken over the presidency of the Association of Asian Open Universities for a three-year term. The 28th Annual Conference held on the OUHK campus in October was the first large-scale activity since we assumed office. Three hundred representatives from over 20 countries attended the four-day conference, exchanging ideas and experiences in promoting open education, which enhanced our anniversary celebrations in a meaningful way.

In this newsletter you will find full coverage of the wide range of anniversary activities that took place. However, as the year comes to a close, it is also a time for looking forward. At our Congregation held this month, over 6,000 students finished their studies, and are starting a new chapter in their lives. Recently, we were thrilled to receive $18 million from the Research Grants Council to subsidize 12 of our research projects, helping us make a big step up in the area of academic research. Let us therefore look forward to a flourishing 2015.
