    Bidding farewell to President
    John C Y Leong

Members of the OUHK family gathered together at a series of events to bid a fond farewell to Prof. John C Y Leong, who retired from the position of President at the end of March after ten years of service at the OUHK.

    High table dinner

The OUHK held its first-ever high table dinner, organized by the sixth session of the Student’s Union, on 11 March to bid farewell to Prof. Leong. Dr Michael Y K Chan, Chairman of Café de Coral Holdings Limited, was invited as Guest of Honour to speak on ‘The Journey of a Brand’ and to share tips for running a successful business. The dinner, attended by more than 100 students, alumni, colleagues and guests, aimed to promote intellectual exchange among participants and to expose students to social and Western dining etiquette in a formal dinner setting.

    Media gathering
Prof. Leong reflected on some of the memorable moments in his ten years’ time at the University during the media gathering organized by the Public Affairs Unit on 19 March. He said that one of his most memorable achievements was transforming the OUHK from a provider of distance-learning programmes to a multi-mode education university. As the growing number of face-to-face students began to strain the capacity of the University, Prof. Leong promptly urged the Government and the Education Bureau for more support in order to provide students with a better learning environment.

    OUHK Orchestra annual performance

The Open University of Hong Kong Orchestra held its annual performance concert on 29 March at the Jockey Club Auditorium in Jubilee College. The concert, dedicated to Prof. Leong, was titled ‘Shine,’ signifying the way in which the educational contributions of the OUHK are as numerous as the shining stars in the sky. The famous violin soloist Mr Samuel Kwok and cello soloist Mr David Wong were invited to perform with the Orchestra. Also joining the wonderful performance was a choir formed by The One and the United Christian Choir, and the Alumni Association of the OUHK.

    Farewell party

More than 200 staff members gathered together to bid farewell to Prof. Leong on 31 March. Joining the farewell party were Council Chairman Dr Eddy C Fong, Deputy Chairman Mr Edward Cheung and a number of alumni. A video disc and photo album showcasing precious moments of Prof. Leong’s days at the OUHK were presented to him, and a group photo comprising all of the participants was taken on the occasion. Prof. Leong, together with incoming President Prof. Yuk-Shan Wong, was invited to unveil the plaque of the President’s Chamber located at the Jubilee College.

    Council dinner

The farewell dinner held on 7 April for Prof. Leong brought together both old and new faces, with more than 80 past and current members of the Council and its sub-committees, as well as senior staff of the OUHK, in attendance.
