First free mobile app to enhance language proficiency in Hong Kong launched

The University has launched a mobile app to enhance the language proficiency of tertiary students — the first app of its kind in Hong Kong. The app uses an iBook format and multimedia to aid users’ learning. At the time of its launch, the app offers four modules including 'English for Effective Communication', 'Business Communication for Executives', 'Use of Chinese' and 'Use of Putonghua'. As part of the OUHK’s commitment to providing open and multi-mode education, part of this mobile app is available for public use free-of-charge.

At the media briefing for the release of the app on 13 March, Vice President Prof. Danny Wong said that ‘Mobile learning is not only an extension of online learning, but also one of the important elements of “open” education, and it breaks the barriers to learning.’ This project was supported by a grant of HK$1.57 million from the Quality Enhancement Grant Scheme of the Education Bureau.

Director of Educational Technology and Publishing Dr Yuen Kin-sun, the person-in-charge of the project, said, ‘Mobile learning can enhance students’ language proficiency. This was found to be most remarkable in ‘Use of Putonghua’ from the results. In addition, nowadays students have a positive attitude towards the use of mobile learning, with over 85% of students surveyed saying that they consider the mobile learning modules to be “interesting, attractive, and motivating for language learning”.’

Dr Yuen continued by saying that before the modules were offered officially, a trial was conducted in which 150 full-time students of the University were recruited to examine the effectiveness of the modules in their learning. Over 70% of the students reported that they will keep using the mobile learning modules to continue developing their abilities.

Currently, the Mobile Apps can only be used on Apple iPad. Interested parties can look up OUHK in iTunes U, download the module and view it with the iBooks application.
