Nearly 300 students awarded government scholarships

On 23 April, a total of 287 students were awarded scholarships from the Self-financing Post-secondary Scholarship Scheme (SPSS), totaling more than HK$6.43 million. Nearly half of the awardees received the Outstanding Performance Scholarship. Among the remaining awardees, the majority were awarded the Reaching Out Award and Talent Development Scholarship, for participation in internship and events outside of Hong Kong, or to further develop their talents beyond their own academic study, respectively.

One of the scholarship recipients was Year 2 English student Lau Yuen-ting, who was awarded an Outstanding Performance Scholarship. Yuen-ting said that she often had discussions with classmates about their study of the English language, which certainly helped them to make great progress! ‘The key to future success is to work hard today,’ she added. Similarly, Year 3 Business student Lau Yuen-keung was elated as he received the Talent Development Scholarship, just after he had claimed the Hong Kong Boxing Association’s Overall Championship for Boxing in the 52 kg group. He said humbly that he was not a talented athlete but just a diligent boxer who had overcome many challenges and failures. His motto is to ‘Never give up’.

Computing graduate shines at Student Paper Contest

Computing graduate Raytheon Lui Wing-on was awarded the first runner-up at the IEEE Hong Kong Section (Undergraduate) Student Paper Contest with his paper about a training algorithm employing hybrid neural networks based on adaptive particle swarm optimization.

School of Science and Technology team’s photobioreactor wins championship in engineering competition

A research team from the School of Science and Technology, led by Assistant Lecturer Mr Wong Yee-keung, won the championship in the Hong Kong Institute of Engineers (HKIE) Environmental Project Competition 2013–2014. With its winning project, titled ‘Algal-based Technology with Semi-continuous System for Biomass Cultivation and Nutrient Removal in Photobioreactor from Primary Settled Sewage,’ the team has developed the first light photobioreactors containing internal LEDs, with a semi-continuous system for algal cultivation and wastewater treatment.

Another research team from the School, supervised by Assistant Professor Dr Yau Yiu-hung, was also awarded fourth prize in the competition with its project ‘Comparison of Formaldehyde Removal Ability between Different Plants in Hong Kong’.
