    President's message

Prof. Yuk-Shan WongThis is my first chance to speak to you here as the President of the OUHK. I am greatly honoured to join this big family and will treasure every opportunity to share my views and feelings with readers through this column.

This year marks the 25th anniversary of the OUHK. Despite its relatively short history, the OUHK's achievements have been tremendous and remarkable, and the organization has come a long way from humble beginnings to play a significant role in local higher education. The solid foundation built up by the leaders who have come before me, including the outgoing Presidents and Council Chairmen, has given me a hearty dose of determination following my decision to humbly take up the leadership of the University. I believe that with the sincere efforts of all staff and support from the community, we are able to face the challenges ahead and to continuously contribute towards education.

I believe that providers of lifelong education must respond flexibly to changing environments. To uphold our mission of providing 'Education for All', we are now 'walking on two legs' — one leg represents distance learning for adults, while the other leg represents the full-time face-to-face learning programmes provided for young school leavers. Alongside our wide range of distance-learning courses, we are going full-steam ahead to expand our full-time undergraduate programmes following the opening of the Jubilee College earlier this year. And many more programmes in various learning modes are sure to come, as we constantly review our work to see if the new programmes meet the needs of the society.

Through a series of short meetings and casual gatherings with colleagues and students in the past few months, I have gained a better understanding of the University, and I have come away from these meetings deeply impressed by the close staff–student relationship, as well as their shared devotion and sense of allegiance towards the University. I firmly believe that the OUHK can grow in excellence with a dedicated team of staff and diligent students who spare no effort in striving for greater accomplishment.

You will notice from the recent issues of Openlink that an array of fabulous activities has been held in celebration of our Silver Jubilee, but there are still many more yet to come. They include international conferences on culture, technology and education; talks by distinguished speakers such as Nobel Laureate Mo Yan, Prof. Liu Mingkang, Dr Chung King-fai and Dr Ann Hui; and the Anniversary Banquet — a magnificent occasion that will bring together OUHK members and friends. I urge you to join us in participating in these exciting celebratory activities. Please visit our homepage to check out the latest details.
