Joining hands with Yuen Yuen Institute to train community health workers for elderly service

In response to the heavy demand for community health workers in the elderly services sector, last October, the OUHK and the Yuen Yuen Institute jointly launched the Youth Career Navigation Scheme in Elderly Services, financed by the Lotteries Fund. The scheme aims to encourage young people to join the long-term care market and has already admitted its first batch of 63 students. An orientation was held on 23 October 2013 on the OUHK campus with Secretary for Labour and Welfare Mr Matthew Cheung Kin-chung and Chairman of the Elderly Commission Prof. Alfred Chan Cheung-ming as guests of honour.

Under the scheme, the participants will receive pre-service training. Upon completion, they will be assigned to work in private residential care homes for the elderly as personal care workers. They will also start to study the OUHK’s Diploma in Health Studies (Community Health Care) programme in order to acquire recognized qualifications. Participants will receive full reimbursement of the tuition fees after they have sucessfully completed the programme.

Exchanging views on the use of simulation in nursing education

A delegation of 15 members from Boromarajonani College of Nursing, Bangkok visited the OUHK on 18 November 2013. Dr Linda Lee, Associate Head of the Division of Nursing and Health Studies, gave an introduction on the nursing profession in Hong Kong and the nursing education offered by the OUHK. Following a tour to our Clinical Nursing Education Centre, the two parties shared their views on the use of simulations in teaching and learning.

    ICDE Standing Conference of Presidents

Dr Li Kam-cheong, Director of the University Research Centre, represented the OUHK to attend the 2013 Standing Conference of Presidents, an important international conference organized by the International Council for Open and Distance Education (ICDE) in cooperation with the European Distance and E-learning Network (EDEN), which took place in Lisbon, Portugal on 27–30 November 2013. Dr Li served as a speaker at the ICDE–EDEN Fellows Panel Discussion on Leadership for Change and also as a presenter at the Hands-on Innovative Leadership Workshop in Open and Distance Education. Before the conference commenced, he also visited the host institution, Universidade Aberta, to learn about their research development.
