    Encouraging research work
OUHK ready to capitalize on new research funding

Universities are places where knowledge is created as well as acquired. The OUHK believes involvement in research can enhance teaching quality in addition to contributing to knowledge creation. Therefore we encourage academic staff to participate in research and provide grants for a number of research projects every year.

The University Research Centre (URC) at the OUHK is a centralized unit for promotion, co-ordination and administration of research. It provides support for academic staff wishing to participate in research, including organizing seminars and workshops for academic sharing and professional development, and administering applications for research grants.

The Government has just launched funding schemes for research which are open to academic staff of self-financing institutions on a competitive basis. To maximize the potential benefit of the funding opportunity, the University takes proposal submissions very seriously. Dr Li Kam-cheong, Director of the URC, said, ‘Many months before the Government announced the details for proposal submissions, the University had already encouraged academic staff to start their preparation work. The URC offered a series of seminars and workshops for academic staff on how to prepare quality research proposals and how to properly implement research. The University also required all proposals to have gone through reviews by senior academics in fields relevant to each respective proposal.’

‘Academics were keen to capitalize on the new funding opportunities. They formed research teams and prepared proposals well ahead of time. It is expected that the University will submit around 40 proposals in the first round of this funding application,’ Dr Li added.

In tandem with this, the URC has formalized two important areas of the procedures for research review, namely research ethics and research safety. All guidelines and application procedures for ethical clearance in research projects involving human subjects, and those for projects involving animals, have been implemented. Guidelines and procedures for research safety have also been prepared, with refinements currently underway.

To further enhance its research capacity, the University is also exploring the possibility of setting up research institutes dedicated to its strategic areas. The URC is currently working on this initiative with the School of Arts and Social Sciences as well as the School of Science and Technology.
