    Twenty-second Congregation

Over 6,000 graduates received their awards from the OUHK at its congregation ceremony held on 9 December 2013, bringing the total number of OUHK graduates to well over 80,000. Graduates for 2013 included nearly 4,000 part-time students (distance learning, part-time face-to-face, and e-learning) and more than 2,000 full-time students. Among them, roughly 56% of the graduates received undergraduate degrees, and nearly 17% received postgraduate awards. The Congregation, held for the first time at the Asia World-Expo, was presided over by the OUHK Council Chairman Dr Eddy C Fong.

Transforming from a self-financing institution into a genuine multi-mode university

In his Congregation address, President Prof. John C Y Leong congratulated the graduates and encouraged them as they move on to the next stage of their working lives. He said that they should go forth with confidence, because the quality education they have received from the University has given them a strong foundation with which to face future challenges. Prof. Leong also mentioned that the pace of change at the top universities in the world has accelerated during the past decade, and the modes of teaching and learning have grown increasingly diversified. He firmly believes that all higher education institutions must continuously adapt their structure, functions, and processes to respond to societal changes, and not let tradition stand in the way of progress.

Prof. Leong also emphasized that the University would not limit its growth only to distance education and face-to-face education. The University has already put in place e-learning utilizing a pure online mode for a small number of programmes, as well as having successfully completed the enhancement of some distance learning programmes with face-to-face components. Prof. Leong said, ‘The OUHK’s latest long-term target is to convert appropriate courses and programmes into a ‘blended learning’ mode through a thoughtful integration of distance learning and face-to-face learning. We believe this will result in a more interactive educational experience.’ Prof. Leong said that this successful transformation of the self-financing OUHK into a genuine multi-mode university was his most satisfying achievement in his ten years of service with the University.
