The inaugural International Conference on Open and Flexible Education (ICOFE), the first major academic event of the OUHK’s 25th Anniversary celebration activities, was held on 16–17 January on the OUHK campus. As a leader of open education in Asia, the University organized the ICOFE to provide a platform for academics, professionals and practitioners in the field to share research, practices and views on the snowballing global trend of flexible and open education.

The University was greatly honoured to have the Acting Permanent Secretary for Education Ms Michelle Li officiating at the Conference. Speaking at the opening ceremony, Ms Michelle Li remarked that, ‘The Government supports the development of open and flexible education through providing quality, diversified and flexible pathways with multiple entry and exit points for secondary school leavers, as well as through promoting the parallel development of publicly funded and self-financing post-secondary education sectors and encouraging life-long learning under the Qualifications Framework.’ Following Ms Li’s comments, President Prof. John C Y Leong introduced the OUHK’s multi-mode education during his welcoming address and said that what was accomplished at this Conference would have a direct impact on teaching and learning.

Under the theme of ‘Making Learning Open and Flexible: Emerging Modes and Approaches,’ the ICOFE gathered 180 experts and practitioners from various countries. Four distinguished leaders delivered keynote addresses, namely, OUHK Vice President (Technology and Development) Prof. Leung Chun-ming, Professor of the McKay School of Education of Brigham Young University Prof. David Wiley, Director of Stanford Artificial Intelligence Lab of the Stanford University and Co-founder of Coursera Prof. Andrew Ng, and Deputy Director of Learning and Teaching Unit of the University of New South Wales Prof. Bob Fox.

In addition to the paper presentations, a number of conference workshops were held to assist participants in mastering relevant practical knowledge and skills. At the closing of the 2-day event, Dr Bayerlein Leopold of the University of New England Business School, Australia was declared the winner in a competition for best practices of flexible learning, while Dr Mohamed S H AL Moshaikeh of King Saud University, Saudi Arabia received the Best Paper Award from among over 100 submissions.
