Opening of the OUHK Jubilee College

The OUHK continues to make history with a bold new facility as it enters its Silver Jubilee year. On 27 February, the Jubilee College at Jockey Club Campus was officially opened by HKSAR Chief Executive and OUHK Chancellor Mr C Y Leung, accompanied by Secretary for Education Mr Eddie Ng. Pro-Chancellor Dr Charles Lee, Council Chairman Dr Eddy C Fong, Deputy Chairman Mr Edward Cheung, 25th Anniversary Steering Committee Chairman Dr Vincent Woo, President Prof. John C Y Leong, Chairman of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Mr T Brian Stevenson and over 400 guests and friends of the OUHK community were also present to witness the OUHK reaching new heights. To add splendor to the event, the Hong Kong Police Pipe Band and the OUHK Orchestra gave performances.

Jubilee College offers full-time programmes in cultural and creative arts, testing and certification, and medical services

The new facility, named the Jubilee College to commemorate the University’s 25th Anniversary, will mainly provide full-time programmes in cultural and creative arts, testing and certification, and medical services. Along with the main campus, it will nurture the talent and future professionals of the next generation.

In his welcoming speech, Dr Eddy C Fong remarked that the Jubilee College enables the University to more effectively meet the educational needs of our society. ‘By providing school leavers with more opportunities to pursue higher education, the Jubilee College enhances the career prospects of youngsters, as well as marking a new stage in the development of the OUHK’s full-time face-to-face teaching,’ he said.

HKSAR Chief Executive commends OUHK’s contribution to education

Mr C Y Leung congratulated the University on its 25th Anniversary and praised its accomplishments in the past decades. ‘Over a quarter of a century, the OUHK has been a valuable asset of our education sector, opening the doors of opportunity to everyone. Today, we are witnessing another outstanding achievement. The opening of the Jubilee College marks another milestone in the OUHK’s development. I am confident that the OUHK will continue to play a leading role in upgrading our workforce so that Hong Kong can adapt and thrive amid technological, economic and social changes ahead,’ he said.

Mr Leung continued, ‘There is no one-size-fits-all style of education. Each student evolves at their own pace with different abilities and different ambitions, goals and outcomes. The OUHK and its graduates are shining examples of what can be achieved when one has the right tools and a common vision to succeed.’

OUHK expresses deep gratitude to supporters

The University is heartened by the enthusiastic support and contributions from philanthropists, organizations, staff and alumni for the construction of the new Jubilee College, particularly the magnanimity of The Hong Kong Jockey Club Charities Trust with its major donation of nearly $200 million. In recognition of the generosity of the Trust, the new campus and the auditorium in the new College have been named the ‘Jockey Club Campus’ and the ‘Jockey Club Auditorium’ respectively. Moreover, several facilities in the building will be named after Dr Bunny Chan, Miss Connie Fong, Fu Tak Iam Foundation and Wu Jieh Yee Charitable Foundation in appreciation of their generous donations.

The total capital cost of the Jubilee College was about $710 million, $317 million of which is in the form of an interest-free loan granted to us by the Government. In Prof. Leong’s vote of thanks, he expressed his sincere gratitude to the Government for its continuous support of the University. ‘We are indebted to the support provided by the Government and the Education Bureau throughout the years. From the Ho Man Tin campus to the campus extension opened in 2008 and the Jubilee College, the Government has unremittingly lent us its support by offering the most-needed land and financial aid. This indeed has been a great encouragement to the OUHK and serves as official recognition of the University’s ability and dedication to providing quality higher education.’
