    President's message

The University has had a string of very eventful months since we kicked off the celebration for the 25th Anniversary. One of the most remarkable moments was the grand opening of the Jubilee College at Jockey Club Campus on 27 February, with HKSAR Chief Executive C Y Leung as our Guest of Honour.

The establishment of Jubilee College speaks to our commitment and dedication to plan strategically for our campus development and academic programmes. The project was a highly challenging one, but thanks to the support and good will of all OUHK members, we were finally able to see our efforts come to fruition. I would like to express my appreciation to all colleagues who worked together to make this happen. I am also very grateful to every well-wisher whose generosity has been crucial to our successful completion of this project.

We have also hosted several other events in celebration of the University’s Silver Jubilee. In mid-January, we hosted the inaugural International Conference on Open and Flexible Education as a platform for academics and practitioners from around the world to gather and share research and views at the OUHK. In February, colleagues, students, alumni and their families spent a Sunday morning away from the campus enjoying the ‘OUHK 25th Anniversary Fun Day’ at Hong Kong Disneyland. These celebratory programmes owe their success to the participation of our OUHK friends. We look forward to your continuous support.

You may have noticed that this edition of Openlink is larger than usual. To commemorate all of the celebrations for the OUHK’s Silver Jubilee, this issue includes photos of all the happy moments captured from the anniversary celebrations, and features the growing importance of research at the OUHK, following the availability of the Government’s new research funding for self-financing tertiary institutions. Specifically, in this issue, the School of Science and Technology will present the latest findings in their respective research projects.

At the Closing-of-the-lunar-Year Luncheon Party for OUHK staff held earlier this year, I was happy to receive a Long Service Award from the University. I will retire from the OUHK at the end of March, making this the last time that I will share my thoughts with you as the President through this column in Openlink. To staff members, I wish to say that, having been an OUHK member for over a decade, I am grateful for all of your combined efforts to grow the University into a dedicated provider of multi-mode education. To students, I hope that you will do your best, maintain a positive mindset and demonstrate your concern for the community. As for the OUHK, with passion and vigour, I am confident that the OUHK will climb to new heights, continue to provide ‘Education for All’, and demonstrate its infinite potential to the society in which we live.
