Jubilee College receives Platinum rating for green campus development

Last September the Hong Kong Green Building Council awarded the OUHK with the Provisional Platinum rating for the design of the new Jubilee College. The 12-storey Jubilee College incorporates creative and environmentally conscious design features. The OUHK, among the nine recipients in Hong Kong, is the first and currently the only tertiary institution to receive this rating. When the whole project has been completed and all environmental commitments have been achieved, the provisional rating will be confirmed.

Architectural design concept formulated from Tetris

The person in charge of the whole construction project, Vice President (Technology & Development) Prof. Leung Chun-ming, said that the inspiration for the architectural design concept of the new building came from Tetris, a tile-matching puzzle video game that was very popular in the 80’s and 90’s. He explained, ‘Playing the game requires an agile mind and fast reaction, which symbolizes well the innovation and flexibility of the education offered by the OUHK. The building design is based on the variety of polyominoes in Tetris, while the colour scheme of white, light and dark grey is a perfect foil for the University’s logo colour of green and blue.’

Environmentally friendly facilities create a green environment

The Hong Kong Green Building Council imposes rigorous assessment criteria under the ‘BEAM Plus Version 1.1 for New Buildings’ standard. Prof. Leung pointed out that the Jubilee College project attained the Provisional Platinum rating on the basis of its contributions to the development of eco-friendly buildings in Hong Kong. ‘There are many energy-saving and environmentally friendly facilities in the building, including a row of small electricity-generating windmills and a 10-storey solar glass curtain-wall, which is currently the highest in Hong Kong. The building has the tallest green wall in Hong Kong on one side, and double-glass curtain-walls on the other three sides, helping to improve air quality and reduce heat and noise. In addition to this, the ‘U-shape’ design and the additional opening at the lower three levels of the building may facilitate air movement and visual permeability at the street level.'

Prof. Leung continued, ‘Inside the building, the air-conditioning system reduces electricity consumption and carbon emission by 20%, while the sensor system for lighting control also achieves energy savings. To create a green environment, there are a number of gardens in the new College. Extensive planting is currently being carried out in the campus plaza and on the rooftop. We have also preserved ‘flame of the forest’ at the site and added special lighting to ensure its healthy growth.’
