    Know Your Emotion

    Stress
    University students often feel stressed. Students come across many stressful events in university: tests, assignments, presentations, financial difficulties, and relationships are just some of the major stressors that students experience.
     
    Moderate levels of stress can actually help us focus, boost productivity, and even increase our energy levels. Also, everyone is different and will be able to cope with various degrees of stress.
     
    But if you are experiencing the following phenomenon recently, please do not hesitate to contact our counsellors for help:
     
    1. Feeling stressful for prolonged period of time.
    2. Stress is affecting your day to day activities.
    3. Too stressed to function, to complete academic work, or see your friends and family.
     
     
    Anxiety
    Feeling anxious is a normal part of life. Although anxiety is not a pleasant feeling, it does serve a purpose by engaging what is called the “Fight or Flight” response when we face a threat or danger. They help us to prepare for an upcoming situation.
     
    However, too much anxiety and worries can hinder your daily function. If you are experiencing the following phenomenon recently, please do not hesitate to contact our counsellors for help:
     
    1. Fast heartbeat, sweating, trembling, shortage of breath, nausea
    2. Feeling fearful, insecure, suspicious and restless
    3. Forgetful, poor concentration, blank in mind, uncontrollable and repetitive thoughts
    4. Your anxiety is affecting other aspects of your life, such as affecting your academics

     
     
    Depress
    Feeling depressed or sad is a basic emotion, meaning that it is an emotion experienced by everyone – no matter your age, culture, or experiences. It is usually in response to an event such as a break up, a loss, or a conflict with a friend and does not have a major effect on your day to day activities.
    However, feeling depressed is more of a concern if you are experiencing the following. Please do not hesitate to contact our counsellors for help:
     
    1. Feeling low in mood, low in energy and less interested in things than usual
    2. Could not help crying most of the time
    3. Cannot sleep at night
    4. Poor appetite or overeating
    5. Feeling of depress is affecting your daily function
    6. Feeling of depress is preventing you from seeing friends and family
    7. Feels worthless or even thoughts of ending your life
     
     
    Lonely
    Being alone is different from feeling lonely. Being alone may be beneficial as it provides the opportunity for you to reflect on your own life and experiences; or you might enjoy doing alone such as exercising, listening to music, or reading; and to relax and recharge.
     
    However, feeling lonely can be a matter. If you are experiencing the following phenomenon recently, please do not hesitate to contact our counsellors for help:
     
    1. Feel as there is no one who you can turn to, spend time with, or no one who truly understands you
    2. Feelings of loneliness are significantly affecting your current relationship, hobbies, or school work
    3. Feelings of loneliness make you difficult to function
