Seminar on RDA and BIBFRAME/Linked Data Projects

    Date: 16 January 2019 (Wednesday)
Venue: Chan Ma Ching Heung Lecture Theatre, OUHK Jockey Club Campus, OUHK
    Time: 9:30 am – 12:30 pm

The Seminar was organized by the OUHK Library on 16 January 2019 to explore the latest development of RDA (Resource Description and Access), the international standard for descriptive cataloguing and BIBFRAME, a model used for expressing and connecting bibliographic data through the semantic web. We are very pleased to have Ms Charlene Chou from the University of Washington Libraries, U.S.A. to talk to us about the latest development of these important international metadata standards and projects, and their impact on resources discovery of Chinese, Japanese, Korean (CJK) and other Asian language materials.  It received an enthusiastic response from the local library community with over 90 library professionals coming from 29 libraries in the academic, public, special, seminary, and the library school sectors participated in the Seminar.

Ms Charlene Chou is the Distinctive Collections Technical Services Coordinator at the University of Washington Libraries. She is the current Chair of Committee on Technical Processing, Council on East Asian Libraries (CEAL) in the United States, which has been working closely with the Library of Congress/Program for Cooperative Cataloguing (LC/PCC) community for cataloging training, rule revisions and best practices. Beginning in 2012, Ms Chou has been the Lead Trainer/Coordinator of CEAL annual RDA Cataloging Workshop. In 2017, she initiated the CONSER CJK Funnel Group as well as the ALMA CJK Interest Group, and is the coordinator for these groups. In addition to CEAL, she has been actively involved with the committee work of ALA/ALCTS, PCC, IFLA and NASIG, etc.

In Part One of the Seminar, Ms Chou shared the recent updates of the 3R (RDA Toolkit Restructure and Redesign) project and CEAL CJK best practices. Attention of the audience was drawn particularly to what has been missing in RDA for CJK materials. Library professionals of the CJK community were encouraged to make suggestions to fill up what’s been missing in the RDA for CJK materials.

In Part Two of the Seminar, Ms Chou talked about updates of BIBFRAME and linked data projects in the United States including those conducted by the Library of Congress and OCLC.  She also shared the findings from the BIBFRAME testing at the University of Washington Libraries, with the focus on the CJK issues.

The Seminar was well received by participants and there was active discussion and interaction among the speaker and participants.  It was a valuable opportunity for local library professionals and practitioners to come together to discuss the important issues and share knowledge and experience particularly for RDA implementation and BIBFRAME and their impact on CJK metadata management and resources discovery.
