OUHK and Caritas-Hong Kong cement ties for degree study 02/08/2007

The Open University of Hong Kong (OUHK) and Caritas Adult and Higher Education Service have joined hands to offer collaborative articulation programmes, providing opportunities for higher diploma or associate degree graduates of Caritas Francis Hsu College and Caritas Bianchi College of Careers to upgrade their qualifications to degree level.

OUHK President Professor John C Y Leong and Caritas-Hong Kong Chief Executive Rev Michael Yeung signed the alliance agreement today (Thursday) at a ceremony held at the University's Ho Man Tin campus..

The collaboration between the two institutions began in 2004 with a partnership with Caritas Bianchi College of Careers. Today's agreement has included Caritas Francis Hsu College in the alliance to provide top-up degree programmes for hospitality management graduates, including those on the Associate Degree in Hospitality Management and BTEC Higher National Diploma in Hospitality programmes of Caritas Bianchi College of Careers; and on the Associate Degree of Business Administration in Tourism and Marketing Management and Associate Degree in Hospitality Management programmes of Caritas Francis Hsu College.

Speaking at the ceremony, Professor Leong said the OUHK and Caritas-Hong Kong shared the same goals and mission, and the academic alliance between the two institutions over the past three years had enabled them to leverage their strengths and provide higher diploma and associate degree holders with more study opportunities locally.

"With our rapidly expanding economy in recent years, the number of business travelers is fast increasing. The Individual Visit Scheme for Mainland visitors has further pushed up the demand for professionals in the hotel, tourism and hospitality industries. The OUHK is honoured to have partnered with Caritas-Hong Kong, which is renowned for its quality education in this field, to offer more professional training for students before they enter the workforce. Such collaboration not only boosts the competitiveness of students but also enables us to respond quickly to the needs of the market," said Professor Leong.

Rev Yeung said the new agreement marked another phase of close relationship between Caritas-Hong Kong and the OUHK, and he looked forward to further cooperation between the two in a wider scope of studies in the future.

The OUHK and Caritas Bianchi College of Careers first offered together the full-time Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours in Management programme and later introduced two more degree programmes in Commercial Design and Hospitality Management. More than 80 students completed these top-up degree programmes in the past two years and the second batch of students will graduate this year.
