Secondary school leaver looks for career advancement through study

    Rachel Pak Wing-yan
Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours in Accounting

Rachel Pak Wing-yan was born in a traditional family and she followed her parent’s wishes to join the workforce soon after completing Form 7. However it did not take long for Rachel to realize the importance of higher academic qualification for career advancement.  She then started saving money and planned for further studies.  She later learned from her friends that there is no entry requirement for most of the part-time undergraduate programmes offered by the OUHK.  She also realized that studying at OUHK is relatively more flexible and the programmes are fully recognized by the Government. She therefore decided to enroll in the University’s Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours in Accounting programme.

Rachel is awarded both the "Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants Scholarship (Undergraduate Programme)"and "Sun Kai Chi Scholarship for Accounting Students" at the 2016/17 Scholarship and Bursary Awards Presentation for her outstanding academic achievement. Although this is the third time that she is receiving scholarships from the University, she is still as excited and thrilled as the first time.  The award is more than just a monetary reward for her, as it is also a huge boost to her confidence and an assurance of her capability and efforts.  Her motivation to excel multiplies every time she gains an award.

During her study at the University, Rachel was deeply impressed by the enthusiastic learning atmosphere and students’ passion for learning.  Many OU students are willing to spend time and attend more than one tutorial class to gain a better understanding of course content.  Many of them would also form study groups for further discussion and exchange of ideas.  Throughout the years, Rachel has discovered the joy of learning and became a passionate learner.

Rachel is now working in auditing for an accounting firm.  She plans to use the scholarship award for further studies to enhance her competitiveness and performance at work. She is hoping to enroll in a Master's Programme in Corporate Governance shortly.  She sincerely hopes that scholarship and bursary donors will continue to support OUHK students and encourage more aspiring learners to pursue further studies.
