Bachelor of Business Administration with Honours in Accounting
Owing to her family’s financial situation, Serena Hon had to start working as a clerical staff right after Form 7. However, her dream to attend the university has always been on her mind.
After working for about half a year, Serena started to look for higher education opportunities when her financial condition had slightly improved. She wanted to pursue a career in accounting, and after comparing a number of Institutions, Serena found that the accounting programme through distance-learning at the OUHK best suited her needs. The flexibility of the programme allowed her to work and to study at the same time amid her busy schedule. The programme would also qualify her to register as a student of the Hong Kong Institute of Certified Public Accountants, which is an important step in her journey to become a certified accountant. Therefore, she enrolled in OUHK in 2013 and graduated earlier this year.
Determined to alleviate her family’s financial difficulties as soon as possible, Serena took five to six courses in each semester to shorten her length of study. Though exhausting, Serena soldiered on. It only took her three years to finish the programme on a part-time basis when normally it would take at least four years to complete. She was also awarded scholarships six times during her studies with outstanding academic performance.
During this time, Serena has not only learnt to manage her time properly, but has also gained many new friendships with classmates coming from different background. She learnt a lot from their diverse experience and enhanced her communication skills with people. In addition, Serena also took up the role as a committee member of the Students’ Union, and enriched her student life through organizing many activities for her fellow schoolmates.
With her impressive performance at the University, Serena got a number of job offers well before graduation. She is currently working in an accounting firm and she is aiming to become a Certified Public Accountant (CPA) in three years’ time. Serena hopes that her story can help inspire those who aspire to learn. “Everyone can achieve their dreams through perseverance,” she said.
