The International Conference on Poverty and Sustainable Development (ICPSD) aims to bring together current research on poverty, inequality and social exclusion and to discuss policies and other measures of poverty alleviation.
Dr Karen Liu Shu-wen, Assistant Professor of the School of Arts and Social Sciences, presented a paper on “The effectiveness of tourism as a tool for poverty alleviation: a case study of a fishing island in South China” at the 6th ICPSD 2019 which was held in Colombo, Sri Lanka on 5–6 December 2019 under the theme of "Sustainable Development Goals 1: a World free from Want: Poverty and Social Exclusion in the 21st Century". Dr. Liu received the "Best Overall Presentation Award" which is given to the most outstanding researcher of the conference under her paper's category. Her winning paper discusses the effectiveness of tourism in alleviating poverty and achieving sustainable development, focusing on fishermen’s livelihood changes.
