Professional Activities

1979 - 1998

Active member of ODLAA (Open and Distance Learning Association of Australia)—have attended conferences and workshops, presented papers, and contributed articles and news items to association publications.

1981 - 1998

Active member of ICDE (International Council for Distance Education)—similar activities to above. A member of the Standing Committee of Presidents’ Task Force on educational technology.

1985

Represented Hong Kong Polytechnic at the World Conference of the ICDE in Melbourne, Australia. Was also a member of the programme planning committee.

1989

Pre-course tutor for the Degree by Independent Studies, offered by what was then the Polytechnic of East London.

1989 - 1991

Conducted tutor training sessions for the Open Learning Institute of Hong Kong (now OUHK). Contributed to self-study materials for tutor preparation.

1990 - 1991

Hong Kong co-ordinator and tutor for the Bachelor of Education programme, jointly offered by Deakin University and the Extramural Department of the Chinese University of Hong Kong.

1990 - 1991

Consultant to the 'Body Shop', Hong Kong, for the preparation of conference presentations on environmental issues by the Managing Director.

Represented Hong Kong Polytechnic at the World Conference of the ICDE in Caracas, Venezuela. Presented a paper, organised and conducted sessions for instructional designers and was a member of the conference evaluation committee.

Member of the Editorial Board of the American Journal of Distance Education.

1994

Co-principal Researcher for the OUHK Research and Development funded project ‘The Study Guide Approach to Computer Aided Learning Design’.

1995

Principal Researcher for the OUHK Research and Development funded project ‘Application of Computer Integrated Telephony (CIT) at the OLI’.

1995 - 1996

Member of the ICDE Standing Committee of Presidents’ Task Force on Educational Technologies.

1995 - 1997

Principal Researcher for the OUHK Research and Development funded project ‘A Week in the Life of an OLI student’. This was a sub-project of a much large investigation (‘A Week in the Life of a Hong Kong student’) involving all tertiary institutions in Hong Kong.

Hong Kong tutor for the Master of Education programme offered by Deakin University.

1996 – 1998

Chair of OUHK Quality Improvement Team project on awards and assessment.

1997

Consultant to the Commonwealth of Learning for evaluation of the Rajiv Gandhi Fellowship Scheme, offered by the Indira Gandhi National Open University.

Co-supervisor of a major Hong Kong University Grants Commission funded project ‘Evaluation of the Part-Time Student Experience’.

Member of the Editorial Board of Distance Education: An International Journal.

Consultant to the Commonwealth of Learning and the Seychelles Ministry of Education and Culture for the development of distance education in the Republic of Seychelles.

Joint (with Dr KS Yuen) plenary paper presented at the 9th Conference of the Asian Association of Open Universities (November 1998). Topic: ‘Developing courses for the Asian distance learner’.

Member of the Higher Education Research and Development Society of Australia, and the International Society for Performance and Instruction.

1999

Invited keynote speaker for the 7th Conference of the Australasian Association of Educators in Medical Radiation Sciences (July 8/9, 1999). Topic: ‘Shaping the Context – Flexible Learning’.  

1999 - 2000

Consultant to the Australian Department of Trade (Austrade) for two projects, the first involving advice on the use of telecommunications in extending the reach of Austrade seminars into remote regions, and the second to design and development of an online version of an Austrade workshop on e-commerce.  

1999 - 2000

Consultant to the Commonwealth of Learning and the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees for the design and development of a distance education course for UNHCR officers.  

2000

Consultant to the World Health Organization to conduct a workshop dealing with online learning and its potential for staff development at WHO.  

2000

Invited speaker for the Annual Meeting of the Australian Society for Educational Technology. Topic: ‘The Three Fs of Educational Technology’.  

2001

Course designer for Commonwealth of Learning team which won the ‘ODLAA Award for Excellent Practice in the Development and Delivery of Distance Education/Open Learning Programs in Response to an International or Cross-Cultural Need’, for the course ‘Writing Effectively for the UNHCR’.
