Learn Sinology and take a study trip to Tsinghua University

Students of the Sinology for Senior Management Executives programme (in Chinese) will go to Tsinghua University in Beijing this autumn on an exchange. The programme, launched last year to teach the integration of traditional Chinese philosophy with Western management theories to enhance leadership efficacy, is now open for enrolment.

LiPACE collaborates with Middlesex University to offer art and design programmes

As the creative industries are playing an increasingly vital role in Hong Kong, LiPACE is planning to launch a series of art and design programmes in collaboration with Middlesex University, UK, in September this year to meet the market needs for design professionals. Programmes include: BA Honours Photography (3 years full-time or 4 years part-time), BA Honours Fashion (3 years full-time), BA Honours Fashion Design, Styling and Promotion (3 years full-time) as well as Intensive Foundation in Art and Design (iFAD) (12 weeks full-time).

Smart diet planning

LiPACE has joined hands with the Hong Kong Nutrition Association to launch a new ‘Eating Smart Diet Planning’ course (in Chinese), which teaches the preparation of healthy dishes and basic nutrition tips. The newly established food labeling system and handling of fresh food in different food premises will also be covered.

‘Healthy and Happy Pet’ seminar series

Jointly organized with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (Hong Kong), the ‘Healthy and Happy Pet’ seminar series (in Chinese) will start in May or June 2010. People who intend to raise pets and those who are already pet owners are welcome to attend. For registration, please visit www.ouhk.edu.hk/lipace/newprog. The Institute plans to offer a related diploma programme this year and details will be uploaded to its website.

New Chinese arts and culture certificate programmes

Following the launch of several courses on Chinese arts and culture in March last year, the Institute will offer certificate programmes in Chinese calligraphy, Cantonese opera percussion and connoisseurship of ancient Chinese ceramics for those who wish to gain more indepth knowledge in these areas. To be taught in Cantonese or Putonghua, the programmes will help students appreciate Chinese culture and develop a sense of traditional Chinese aesthetics.

CBMP students visit Wetland Park with Commercial Radio programme hosts

LiPACE organized a visit to Hong Kong Wetland Park jointly with the Women’s Commission, Commercial Radio and the Capacity Building Mileage Programme Student Association (CBMPSA) on 23 October 2009. CBMPSA members accompanied elders from the Senior Citizen Home Safety Association in the visit to the park. Actresses Ms Leung San, Ms Lily Leung and Ms Annie Liu also took part and shared their green experiences with the students and elders.

Building team spirit through adventure camp

An adventure camp was organized for the first batch of students of the BA Honours Business Management programme jointly offered by LiPACE with Middlesex University to enhance their team spirit, co-operation, leadership and self-efficacy. During the activity, which took place in October last year at Tai Tam Scout Centre, students were asked to play a series of specially designed games. Participants enjoyed the day camp so much that they recommended it be made longer in the coming year.

Investor Education Day

At the Investor Education Day Seminar 2010 on 16 January, famous stock commentators Dr Law Ka-chung, Dr Kenny Tang, Mr Alan Luk, Mr Eddy Wong and Mr Clement Chan shared their thoughts on the topic of ‘Market Outlook and Investment Attitude for 2010’ in two sessions with 800 attendees. Around 1,000 people registered for each session and the speakers received around 150 floor questions from the audience. The event was jointly organized with the Securities and Futures Commission.

Channeling positive energy through seminars on Coping with Adversity

LiPACE and the Women’s Commission joined hands in organizing a series of public seminars under the theme of 'Coping with Adversity' in October 2009 to empower women to respond to adversity with the necessary skills and a positive mindset. A total of 4,000 people attended the four seminars, during which guest speakers from different fields shared their life stories.

New LiPACE office

The main office of LiPACE was moved to the OUHK-CITA Learning Centre (OCLC) located at 201–203 Lai King Hill Road in Kwai Chung, N.T. on 25 January 2010. It handles enquiry and enrolment services together with the Island Learning Centre (ILC) in Sheung Wan. With the opening of the OCLC, more space is available for LiPACE to offer more courses, such as those related to photography, fashion and design. The 3,000-sq.m. OCLC occupies the first five floors of a building owned by the Clothing Industry Training Authority (CITA). It has seven classrooms, two PC laboratories, two self-access PC laboratories, a design studio and other student amenities.

New Senior Programme Manager Dr Magdy Ma

Dr Magdy Ma joined the Institute in January 2010. She got her MA in Design from Hong Kong Polytechnic University and PhD from North Carolina State University. A former Senior Information Officer with the HKSAR Government, Dr Ma has created visual design solutions for a wide range of public service advertising campaigns. She has written and published two books — Disoriented Visual Objects: Their Creators and Users (1999) and A Semiotic Phenomenology of Visual Rhetoric (2009) — and taught visual communication as well as design history and theory. With a research interest on the socio-cultural implications of technology and design, she is developing a theory of visual wellbeing that addresses the quality of human visual life.
