Visit by Under Secretary for Food and Health

Under Secretary for Food and Health Prof. Gabriel Leung visited the OUHK on 20 October, during which he toured Campus Phase Two and watched simulated teaching demonstration at the Clinical Nursing Education Centre. Prof. Leung also discussed issues such as the impact of the new '3-3-4' education system on nursing programmes, the supply of nurses as well as the offer of nurse training in mainland China with OUHK President Prof. John C Y Leong and staff members.

Nursing students mainland exchanges

Each year, full-time nursing students embark on summer exchanges in mainland China. This year's exchange saw 43 Year 1 students and teachers go to Guangzhou. They were warmly received by their peers from the School of Nursing at Sun Yat-sen University. They visited Guangzhou Mental Hospital, the First Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University and the First Affiliated Hospital of Guangzhou University of Traditional Chinese Medicine.

Twenty-six Year 2 students undertook clinical attachments and case studies at Zhuhai People's Hospital and the Fifth Affiliated Hospital of Sun Yat-sen University. The team, led by four lecturers, shared experiences and views with their mainland counterparts on the use of simulation in nursing education, intravenous care and different health care systems.

Sixteen Year 3 students and teachers gained a lot of clinical experience from their training at Guangdong Provincial Hospital of Traditional Chinese Medicine and Guangzhou Charity Hospital.

All three valuable and memorable excursions were sponsored by the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce.

CGCC charity walk

Sixteen full-time nursing students took part in the Chinese General Chamber of Commerce (CGCC) Charity Walk from Victoria Park to Quarry Bay Park on 27 September, in celebration of the PRC's 60th Anniversary. They were accompanied by Lecturers Ms Alisa Wong and Ms Wong Suet-lai and Nursing Laboratory Officer Ms Cathy Lee.

Winner of design competition

Full-time Year 4 nursing student Kan Kam-yin has won the Infection Control Poster Design Competition organized by the Hong Kong Baptist Hospital in September 2009. She was overjoyed and thanked teachers and fellow students for their support.

Booklets on healthy ageing

With the support of Executive Council member and Elderly Commission Chairman Dr Leong Che-hung, the OUHK's nursing team has published a set of booklets on healthy ageing, giving tips to the elderly on how to look after themselves and lead a fruitful life. The four booklets were written by Assistant Professor Dr Linda Lee and Lecturers Mr Wong Ka-fai, Mr Lam Ching and Ms Ivy Yau. 1,000 copies have been distributed to 40-plus elderly centres and homes around the campus.

Debate on sustainable buildings

In response to the Council for Sustainable Development's promotion of community involvement in the development of sustainable buildings, the OUHK's School of Science and Technology held a debate competition on 16 October to provide a forum for members of the University to voice their opinions. School Dean Prof. Ho Kin-chung, Assistant Professor Dr Yau Yiu-hung, Council members Ms Iris Tam and Mr Michael Lai, and Mr Benjamin Leung of the Faculty of Education of the Chinese University of Hong Kong served as adjudicators. The Students' Union team and environmental studies student Eddie Chan were presented the Best Debating Team and Best Debater awards.

Citi Community Intern Programme 2009

Four OUHK full-time students -- accounting Year 3 students Elaine Chan and Wing Tam, accounting Year 4 student Ding Cheng-li and human resource management Year 3 student Tse Yuk-shan -- have been selected to join the Citi Community Intern Programme and they attended the launch ceremony on 15 October with Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration Lecturer Dr Alex Mak. Jointly organized by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service and Citigroup, the Programme arranged 72 business students in nine local universities to work as interns for 36 non-governmental organizations. The ceremony was officiated by HKSAR Secretary for Financial Services and the Treasury Prof. K C Chan. The internships are from December this year to January or February next year, two days a week.

B&A Peer Mentorship Programme

The Lee Shau Kee School of Business and Administration has recruited 37 senior year student mentors and 18 school mentors from its academic staff to help full-time Year 1 freshmen in their first year of study. The launch ceremony for this year's Peer Mentorship Programme, first introduced in 2006, was held on 18 September. School Dean Prof. Ip Yiu-keung gave a welcome speech to mentees, which was followed by a talk on how to cope with university life by Counsellor Mr Henry Lee and the presentation of certificates to student mentors.

Taekwondo Society street performance
