Credits gained from completing this course may be counted towards the ‘free choice credit’ component of most degree programmes. Successful students will receive certificates in addition to their credits. Alternatively, students may choose only to sit the end-of-course examination which is on a non-credit basis. Successful examination candidates are awarded certificates.

Aims
This course aims to:

  • Develop students’ proficiency in communicating in English in study, work and social contexts;

  • Help learners to develop and apply their knowledge of the use of the language as a system, a medium for learning, and a tool for practical and social communication.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • Reviewing the basics -- grammatical and lexical foundations of reading and writing; analysing and constructing texts; basics of speaking and listening

  • Bringing it all together -- intensive reading; written text types and styles; speaking and listening

  • Communication for social and persuasive purposes -- techniques and styles of persuasive writing; speaking and listening in social contexts

  • Academic communication -- reading skills for academic study; taking notes; summarizing and paraphrasing; writing short reports and academic essays; speaking and listening in academic settings

  • Workplace communication -- preparing for job applications; interview skills; written and spoken communication in the workplace

Learning support
This course involves 300 study hours. There will be 16 two-hour tutorials.

Assessment
There will be five tutor-marked assignments and a final examination which will cover all four language skills -- listening, speaking, reading and writing.

Equipment
Students will need access to an audio CD player and a VCD player. The course also includes a CD-ROM, for which a PC with a CD-ROM drive is needed, but its use is optional.
