This course is a core course of the BSc/BSc (Hons) in Product Design, Testing and Certification, BSc/BSc (Hons) in Applied Science (Biology and Chemistry) and BSc/BSc (Hons) in Product Design and Technology programmes. This course is also recommended to students whose major interest is in a degree programme in Electronics, Communication Technology, Computing, or Engineering Mechanics, Materials and Design.

There are no prerequisites for the course.

Aims
The overall aims of this course are to provide students with comprehensive knowledge and information in safety and reliability for science and technology.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • Safety analysis and risk assessment

  • Safety practices and audits

  • Principles of reliability

  • Testing and predication of reliability

  • Maintainability

Learning support
There will be five two-hour tutorials and six two-hour surgeries throughout the course.

Assessment
There will be three tutor-marked assignments and a written final examination.

Online requirement
This course is supported by the Online Learning Environment (OLE). You can find the latest course information from the OLE. Through the OLE, you can communicate electronically with your tutor and the Course Coordinator as well as other students. To access the OLE, you will need to have access to the Internet. The use of the OLE is required for the study of this course.

Equipment
Students will need access to a computer system suitable for connecting to the Internet. The recommended minimum computing requirements are:

  • Pentium II CPU

  • VGA display card and monitor

  • 128 MB RAM

  • 60 MB free hard disk space

  • CD-ROM drive

  • 56 kbps modem (or broadband Internet access)

  • Keyboard and mouse

Software
Students will need access to a computer with Microsoft Windows XP/Vista/7 and an Internet browser.
