Aims
This course aims to introduce learners to the basic communication knowledge they will need for writing business correspondence, engaging in small talk and participating in business meetings. It acquaints learners with theories of effective communication, and the effects of technology, discrimination and cultural factors on business communication.

The course also introduces learners to basic Business English and helps them to improve their ability to communicate effectively in English in a modern business environment.

Contents
The course covers the following topics:

  • Business communication basics

  • Business writing strategies

  • Fundamentals of business writing

  • Business letters

  • Business documents: Memos, emails, agendas and minutes

Learning support
There will be nine two-hour tutorials.

Assessment
There are two tutor-marked assignments (TMAs) and one three-hour examination. Students must use word processing software (such as Microsoft Word) to prepare the TMAs, and submit the TMAs via the Online Learning Environment (OLE).
